Triglav national park
Triglav (2864 m), is like a deity that has gathered under its protection the most attractive peaks, the deepest chasms, the mightiest rock faces, the most beautiful lakes, the most unusual formations of the high Karst, the most permanent Slovenian glaciers, the greatest wealth of plant and animal species, and the most picturesque proof of the hardiness of humans. Almost the entire territory of the Slovenian Julian Alps, around 4% of Slovenia’s territory, and more than half of the land of Bovec, lies in the country’s largest area of official protection for the natural and cultural landscape. The treasures of one of the oldest protected areas in the Alps were pointed out back in the beginning of the 20th century, and they were first protected in earnest as far back as 1924.
Experiencing the Natural and Cultural Landscape
The best starting point for exploring this magnificent park is the information centre in Trenta, and the best experiences can be offered by the numerous marked trails. With a little help from your imagination, the famous and fabulous tales of Zlatorog (Goldhorn) come alive, tales of a creature whose horns were the key to the gold in the mountain of Bogatin and whose blood produced the all-healing Triglav flowers. Using the information panels in the park, you can travel through time to the lives of the first mountaineers, the hardy shepherds, through layers of earth to the depths of the karstic underworld below the heights of the rocky surface. Listen! The whistling of marmots draws your gaze higher – to the peaks of the mighty rock faces, to the chamois on the rocky ledges, to a hawk in a flight.
Almost a third of the Triglav National Park lies within the territory of the municipality of Bovec. This covers virtually the entire upper Soča, the Trenta Valley, Loška Koritnica, the Bovec Basin, and the Srpenica Gorge.
In the Triglav National Park, the highest peaks reach over 2000 metres high, while the deepest karstic caves plunge more than 1000 metres deep.
Among more than 5500 forms of life discovered in the Triglav National Park, there is a number of species found nowhere else in the world. The flight of the Trenta Brown becomes the flight of a highly important butterfly, and Zois’s Bellflower the most beautiful blue of the mountains.
